Abstract Purpose — The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of the enlargement process of the European Union as a factor fostering international competitiveness of EU Member States. Findings — By using a dynamic panel data estimator the authors find three main empirical evidences.
Social implications — The policy implication derived is that the more the new EU Members catch up technologically as a result of the integration process, the more they will benefit in terms of economic development.

Why we need a European STI policy Traditionally, excellent research and innovation both represent an enormous contribution towards better life quality in the European Union EU. Europe Strategy Europe is a year strategy proposed by the European Commission on 3 March for advancement of the economy of the European Union. Key Initiatives of the Innovation Union Within the Innovation Union alone there are more than 30 action points out of which three key initiatives aim to: Make Europe a world-class performer in science Revolutionize the way the public and private sectors work together Innovation Partnerships Remove bottlenecks to create new markets for skills, patents, venture capital and standards to quickly implement ideas on the free market.
